## About
Polkadot is an open-source, Substrate-built multichain metaprotocol designed to enable a heterogeneous network of specialized blockchains (parachains) to interoperate securely and at scale. Conceived by Dr. Gavin Wood and developed by Parity Technologies with stewardship from the Web3 Foundation, Polkadot’s architecture separates consensus and execution responsibilities: a shared Relay Chain provides finality and shared security while parachains host application-specific runtimes. DOT, the native protocol token, is used for staking in Nominated Proof-of-Stake (NPoS), governance participation, and bonding tokens when projects secure parachain slots.
